Barcelona’s superstar six-time Ballon d’Or winner has just over a year remaining on his current contract. And extending the 32-year-old’s deal has not proved successful as yet, while Barcelona’s turbulent campaign has not helped.
Prior to the coronavirus crisis suspending the season, manager Ernesto Valverde was axed in January. Setien replaced him in the dugout, but a public spat between Messi and sporting director Eric Abidal over Valverde’s departure was a huge low point for the Catalan giants.
