Arsenal had to pay out a huge amount of money to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to tear up his contract at the club. The 32-year-old signed for Barcelona on deadline day after a whirlwind 24 hours that saw the striker fly to the city without an agreement.

Mikel Arteta had made it clear that there was no way back after a breach of discipline in December. It saw Aubameyang stripped of the captaincy and he never played again for the Gunners but his £350,000-a-week wages were burning a hole in Arsenal's pockets.

But according to The Times, it meant that Arsenal have had to fork out £7million in compensation as one lump sum to get him off the books.
