First class rail compartments should be scrapped in the north of England until the network is good enough to give passengers a decent service, Andy Burnham has said.
The mayor said that until the north gets the expanded timetable it was originally promised in 2014, he couldn’t ‘see a justification for first class compartments when people can’t get a seat, when they are paying ticket prices at the level that they are’.
His comments came as the rail industry draws up plans for a changed timetable through Manchester from next December, due to continued capacity constraints in the Castlefield rail corridor - constraints that have never been resolved, despite government promises.
