Schools are to shut from the end of Friday amid the latest government moves to slow down the coronavirus pandemic. Boris Johnson confirmed the mandatory move, which until now ministers had been keen to avoid, at today’s Downing Street press conference on the crisis.
Education secretary Gavin Williamson also confirmed colleges and nurseries would be asked to do the same, as well as independent schools.
However provisions will remain in place to ensure children of key workers, including NHS staff, will still be looked after - one of the concerns that had made ministers wary of closing schools before now.
