Omicron is so infectious that people are "very likely" to come across someone infected with the new variant unless you are "living like a hermit", according to an expert.
The new variant is spreading so quickly that "you have to work on the basis that anyone you come into contact with has it", said the professor.
Professor Eleanor Riley, a professor of immunology and infectious disease at the University of Edinburgh, spoke on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
