A glass of wine or pint of beer a day could stave off dementia, according to new research. Drinking in moderation boosts brain power - and slows up mental decline, say scientists.
The findings were based on almost 20,000 older people who were tracked for almost a decade. Those who enjoyed a regular tipple - up to two drinks a day - were a third less likely to have poor cognitive function compared to tee-totallers.
This includes learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, problem solving, decision making and attention. On average, their mental capacity was 29 percent stronger.
