'You can buy whatever you want, boxes and boxes': How lockdown turned Bury New Road into the deadly black market drug capital of the north

A huge black market for illicit prescription drugs, centred around Bury New Road in Strangeways, sprung up during lockdown, a new report has revealed.

The street, on the outskirts of Manchester city centre, has become the 'established epicentre for non-prescribed prescription drugs', the Greater Manchester Testing and Research on Emergent and New Drugs report found.

Drug users from across the region are using public transport to travel to the area to buy medications such as pregabalin, diazepam, tramadol, zopiclone and xanax, researchers said.

The drugs, which are thought to be often counterfeit or imported from abroad, are being sold openly on the streets and in shops for as little a 50p a tablet when bought in bulk. READ MORE: 'It’s
