The wife of a former police officer says coronavirus may have saved his life after medics discovered his undiagnosed heart condition.

Detective Constable Paul Finnan, 58, who worked for West Midlands Police and the National Crime Agency, tested positive for the virus last month.

But the father-of-two from Shirley, Solihull, deteriorated and he was rushed to Heartlands Hospital for oxygen on January 23.

He was transferred to the hospital's ICU for full ventilation in an induced coma four days later. His wife Geraldine Finnan said doctors also carried out heart checks after paramedics were concerned about his low blood pressure.
