Poltergeist when the little girl touches a static TV screen and a ghoulish hand pops out? That's the kind of thing I fear may happen if I wear it – the 'ghouls' bumping me off by way of a freakish accident, like choking on an edamame bean or being crushed by a piano falling from a great height.
I realise that's a scene from A Fish Called Wanda but superstition is both focused and farcical - just think about how panicked people look when they want to 'touch wood' and can't find any.
I should really get rid of the necklace, but there's a childlike angst attached to that too – what if I pass on the bad juju to others?
I know I sound crazy but I'm not alone in thinking that 'heartbreak' jewellery holds as much significance just as 'honeymoon'.
