Varela became the first United signing after Sir Alex Ferguson retired in the summer of 2013 but did not make his debut until December 2015.
The Uruguayan's final appearance for United against Liverpool in the Europa League ended at half-time as he was blameworthy for Philippe Coutinho's away goal equaliser that put Liverpool 3-1 ahead on aggregate.Varela appeared in Jose Mourinho's first match in official charge at Wigan in 2016 but was not named in the pre-season tour squad and was sold to Penarol in Uruguay a year later.
