Brits have been warned of a potential "cold snap" taking hold in just a few days' time with snow set to fall in May.Despite temperatures being likely to hit 18C in the South today, the UK's recent spell of warm weather is coming to an abrupt end.

Forecasters now say that bitter northerly winds will soon create unsettled conditions and see the mercury plummet. Netweather forecaster Ian Simpson writes in a long range forecast for May 2 to May 8: "There is about 30% chance of a cold snap early this week with cold northerlies coming closer to affecting the British Isles."The weather may turn more unsettled in the west and south, especially late in the week, with low pressure developing in the eastern North Atlantic, and potential for thundery outbreaks."[There will be] potential for some colder weather early in the week but turning warm late on, with the exception of eastern coastal areas where temperatures will be close to or slightly below normal."However, he did go on to say that a "blocking anticyclone" may "transfer more [cold wind] towards Scandinavia", thus "bringing a continuation of the generally easterly winds but with warmer air heading in from the south-east".

Meanwhile, advanced weather modelling maps from WX Charts show that snow will make landfall in the UK at the start of May. They predict that northern parts of Scotland, near Aberdeen and Inverness, will see some flurries on May 2, before these spread to more of Scotland as well as the North East of England on May 3.
