Edinburgh-Winning Scottish Romance ‘The Road Dance’ Snapped Up for the U.S. by Music Box Films

Naman Ramachandran Music Box Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Richie Adams’ “The Road Dance,” the Scottish adaptation of John McKay’s 2002 bestselling novel. In the film, Kirsty MacLeod (Hermione Corfield) dreams of a better life away from the isolation that suffocates her in a small village on an island in the Outer Scottish Hebrides. Suppressing these aspirations, she sees her lover Murdo (Will Fletcher) conscripted for service in WWI, soon to set off and fight alongside the other young men from the village. A road dance is held in their honor the evening before they depart, and it’s on this fateful evening that Kirsty’s life takes a dramatic and tragic turn.

Compact Pictures Options Rachelle Atalla’s Acclaimed Debut Novel ‘The Pharmacist’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Following the completion of its first feature film, Aylin Tezel’s “Falling Into Place” – which Global Screen has just acquired for sale at Cannes – Glasgow-based emerging indie Compact Pictures has optioned “The Pharmacist” for development. The novel, the debut by Scots-Egyptian author Rachelle Atalla, was chosen as a Sunday Times Book of the Week and nominated for the Scottish National Book Award. Laura McBride from Compact Pictures originally identified the book as a perfect story for the company. The project is moving into development with Atalla attached to adapt for the screen, with Compact hoping to secure interest in the film during its first outing to next week’s Cannes Film Market.
