Vincent Kompany opens talks with Burnley after leaving job as Anderlecht manager

Burnley have opened talks with Vincent Kompany over the vacant managerial position at Turf Moor after the Manchester City icon left his post at Anderlecht on Wednesday evening.The Belgian defender, who achieved legendary status during his 11-year stint at the Etihad, left the Premier League champions back in 2019 to kickstart his coaching career with Anderlecht, initially in a player-manager role.

After some teething issues, Kompany stepped away from coaching until he took the top job on a full-time basis in 2020 after hanging up his boots.After being linked with the vacancy at Burnley - who dropped out of the Premier League on the final day of the season last weekend - Kompany and Anderlecht swiftly came to an agreement on a mutual departure.

The 36-year-old guided the Belgian giants to third spot in the Jupiler Pro league and also came agonisingly close to Belgian Cup glory, only to come up short in the final.Kompany is now set to be the man tasked with ensuring Burnley bounce back to the top-flight at the first time of asking, with the ex-defender seemingly not put off by their relegation.The Athletic revealed that Kompany was locked in talks with Burnley on Wednesday, with the Clarets hierarchy keen to have their new boss in place by the end of next week.Is Kompany the right man to bring Burnley back into the Premier League?
