The five-week wait for Universal Credit is “exacerbating” debt as four in five poor claimants have their first payment docked, a damning report finds today.
The National Audit Office declared the standard wait for first payment “can exacerbate claimants’ debt and financial difficulties”, with many organisations saying it causes “hardship”.
Even when the first payment does come, 80% of low-income households - compared to 61% of all households - have “deductions” from their benefits of up to 30%.
In many cases this is because they took an advance to cover the five-week gap. The NAO said the five-week wait “does not cause all the issues claimants may face”, but the wait “exacerbates” problems.
