They went close to equalling the record last year, setting 98 points as they retained the title. Liverpool looked well on course to beat the record as they won the league last month after City's defeat at Chelsea confirmed the title will head to Anfield.

At that point, they could have recorded a maximum total of 107 points - well clear of City's record. But after defeat at the Etihad and the weekend's 1-1 draw with Burnley, Liverpool knew any more dropped points would mean they could not hold.
