Spring should finally arrive next week, forecasters say. Warm, bright weather is on the way after months of rain, flooding and sub-zero chills, with the mercury hitting a sunny 17C by Tuesday.

Downpours that have blighted Britain will start to fade away to be replaced with clear skies and “pleasantly warm” temperatures.

Flood-ravaged parts of the country will finally get some respite. The Met Office said: “Through much of next week there should be more settled, drier and often brighter conditions than of late.” But winter is leaving with an icy blast.
