UK death toll over 54,000 as new figures show extra 10,000 deaths

The UK's 'true' coronavirus death toll has risen to 54,000, new data has revealed. But the new data also showed the trend of deaths declining is continuing - with the lowest number of mentions of Covid-19 in death registrations for nine weeks.

The figures for covering England and Wales reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in its latest data now stands at 48,866.

That means the whole UK death toll has surpassed 54,000 according to a Reuters tally of official data sources. The toll is far higher than the UK's official death toll reported by the government, which stood at 42,647 yesterday.
