Two arrested after four-month-old baby dies of 'catastrophic' injuries

Police were called to Barnsley Hospital on May 16 after reports that a newborn baby had suffered catastrophic injuries.She spent the next four months on life support but tragically never recovered, before dying on Monday afternoon.

A post mortem examination carried out on Tuesday found the cause of death is unascertained, pending further medical enquiries.A 31-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, both from Athersley, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody for questioning by detectives.Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge, the senior investigating officer, said: "The injuries suffered by this little girl when she was just two days old were so catastrophic that she could not recover and her life.
