An executive order signed by President Trump expanding immigration restrictions to protect the labor market for American workers amid the pandemic, will expire this week -- and immigration hawks are urging him to extend it.
Trump first signed an order in April that restricted some green cards, and then expanded it in June to include a number of guest-worker programs -- including new H-1B tech worker visas, H-2B seasonal worker visas, certain J work and education exchange visitor visas and L executive transfer visas.
It contained exemptions for military and health care workers, and cases deemed in the national interest. While Trump imposed separate travel restrictions to protect public health, this was done specifically to protect the job.
