Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser: “If anyone was to describe a perfect, gentle man, it would be Denis Gregson. “He was a truly remarkable, honest and reliable man who adored and lived for his family, and was always on hand to help anyone who needed it; and he’ll be a big loss.”The youngest of five siblings, Denis was born in Leeds on February 26 1925, attending the city’s Victoria School and then becoming an apprentice cooper.He registered for the forces on his 18th birthday, three years into World War II, and was called up to join the Royal Marines on March 23 1943 – taking part in six weeks of initial training at Lympstone in Devon, followed by months of intensive preparations including field and weapon training at their Dalditch.
