The victim suffered multiple shark bites as she was mauled while swimming around 500 metres from the shore on Thursday. The young woman, who has not been named, was on a sabbatical on the Caribbean when she was attacked.
The secretary-general of the prefecture, Mikael Dore, said: "It was probably a tiger shark of significant size, three to four metres in length." Saint Martin - or Sint Maarten - is divided into Dutch and French territories.
