This Morning has quietly ditched the energy bills prize on its Spin To Win competition after backlash from viewers. Viewers of the ITV magazine show, hosted by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield following their return from their annual summer break, were divided on Monday after a controversial change to the daily challenge.

During the game, a viewer is called up and must give a code word to play, and are then given the option of spinning the wheel or the balls to win a prize.

Spin To Win players can win various amounts of money ranging from hundreds to thousands of pounds. But amid the current cost of living crisis and soaring energy prices, a different prize was added to the wheel – having their bills paid for them for four months. The competition prize provoked furious responses from some fans of the show on social media.TV critic and broadcaster Scott Bryan labelled it "tone deaf" as he tweeted: "#ThisMorning has turned completely dystopian and Black Mirror by offering to pay energy bills as a competition prize." TV watchdog Ofcom confirmed that it received 170 official complaints about the This Morning energy bills prize, according to The Mirror. The prize was updated the following day to cover any household bills, not just energy.

But after a caller won £3,000, Phil, 60, drew more backlash by saying: "I wonder how much of that they can complain about online." Viewers on Wednesday have spotted that energy and household bills have been removed as prizes completely.
