Scotland is known for its many offshore islands, most notably larger ones such as Skye, Bute, and Arran. However, in total there are hundreds of isles off the coast of the mainland.
Many of these are uninhabited, and others are so small that you may not even know they are islands at all. Each of the islands has a story and a history.
One of the lesser known and more interesting is that of Hirta, the largest island in the St Kilda archipelago. Hirta has an area of just over six km2 and approximately nine miles of coastline.
It is one of Scotland's six World Heritage Sites, and visitors are encouraged. The island is known for its dramatic geography, with high slopes and rugged terrain.
