Lisa Dawson is an advocate of ‘shopping your own home’ – aka working with what you’ve already got, rather than buying new. Looking around each of the rooms in your home at the furniture and accessories you own, and thinking about how they might work in a different place, is a simple enough idea, but it can have surprisingly effective results – and, says Dawson, ‘It’s extremely invigorating, and actually very good fun.’She suggests taking one room at a time and editing everything in it, from rugs and furniture to the contents of cupboards and shelves. ‘Be ruthless,’ she says. ‘Sometimes we get so used to things being on our shelves that we don’t stop to think whether or not we even care for them.
