Carson Burton Variety will publish its inaugural 10 Artisans to Watch list on October 19. Those selected to be on the list will be invited to attend an exclusive event during the Savannah Film Festival.In celebration of Variety’s continued coverage of crafts, the 10 artisans selected will be spotlighted in a panel conversation at the Georgia festival moderated by Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay.

Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers) is one of several actors who will be honored at this year’s SCAD TVfest in Atlanta.

Michaela Zee Charlotte Stoudt, showrunner of Apple TV+’s hit “The Morning Show,” will receive the Variety Showrunner Award at the 12th annual SCAD TVfest. The festival returns this year in Atlanta from Feb.

Caroline Brew editor The Savannah College of Art and Design’s 26th annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival, which will run from Oct. 21-28, has announced its film lineup. “Nyad,” a film based on the life of world-class athlete Diana Nyad, will open the festival on Oct.

Sophia Scorziello editor “Oppenheimer” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema will be honored with Variety’s Creative Impact in Cinematography award at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. In addition to this summer’s Christopher Nolan blockbuster, the Dutch cinematographer has worked as Nolan’s DP on “Tenet,” “Interstellar” and Dunkirk” along with Jordan Peele for “Nope” and Spike Jonze for “Her.” “SCAD is proud to partner with Variety on this year’s Creative Impact Award, which will be presented to cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema,” said SCAD Savannah Film Festival executive director Christina Routhier.

McKinley Franklin editor Variety will publish its second annual 10 Artisans to Watch list on Oct. 18 and recognize the honorees at this year’s SCAD Savannah Film Festival.  In celebration of Variety’s continued coverage of crafts, the 10 artisans selected will be spotlighted in a panel conversation at the festival moderated by Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay. The list will include artisans across cinematography, costume design, editing, hair/makeup, production design, sound editing/design and visual effects.  The event will highlight the behind-the-scenes artists that are invaluable to this year’s best films and shows. 

McKinley Franklin editor The SCAD Savannah Film Festival will debut the SAVFF LGBTQ+ Short Film Competition during this year’s festival which runs from Oct. 21 to 28. The competition will broaden available resources for rising queer filmmakers through mentorship and exposure. Each filmmaker will have access to networking and educational opportunities throughout the duration of the competition.  SCAD is currently accepting submissions via FilmFreeway for the competition. Directors, writers and producers who identify as LGBTQ+ are eligible to apply.  Per the official terms, “films should be under 40 minutes in length and represent excellence in storytelling and execution. Submitted films can be in narrative or documentary formats, reflecting unique insight into LGBTQ+ themes, issues, or ideas. The film’s content should embody a personal connection to the subject and showcase the filmmaker’s artistic approach to visual storytelling.”

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Variety has named its inaugural 10 Artisans to Watch. The honorees will be feted at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival on Oct. 27. With the event, Variety is looking to spotlight the behind-the-scenes artists that are invaluable to this year’s best films and shows and are rising stars in their fields. The 10 artisans selected are cinematographer Todd Banhazl (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”) , make-up head Michelle Chung (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), composer Amie Doherty (“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” “Of Medicine and Miracles”), sound designer Mike James Gallagher (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”), VFX artist and SCAD alumnus Jessica Love (“Thor: Love and Thunder”), hair department head Deaundra Metzger (“Till”), editor Scott Morris (“Armageddon Time”), costume designer Gersha Phillips (“The Woman King”), supervising sound editor Mac Smith (“Moon Knight) and production designer Ethan Tobman (“The Menu”).

Emily Longeretta Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello, the creators of HBO Max’s massive hit “Hacks,” will receive the inaugural Variety Showrunner Award at the 10th annual SCAD TVfest.The series, which follows the relationship between a comedy legend (Jean Smart) and a young writer (Hannah Einbinder), launched in May 2021.
