Eudelo says many of her clients get hung up on the distinction between dry and dehydrated skin, which she says is unhelpful as both result in a lack of lipids or oil and water-holding substances in the skin.She explains: “dry and dehydrated skin can’t really be separated as the lipid content of the skin and the water content of the stratum corneum are interwoven.” Often times, Williams says the term ‘dehydrated skin’ is used to describe a more extrinsically caused reduction of water content in the stratum corneum that can be caused by excessive cleansing, while ‘dry skin’ may be used to describe a genetic predisposition in individuals with a tendency for eczema, for example.
