Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford following England’s defeat in the Euro 2020 final to Italy. Rashford was among three stars who missed penalties in the shootout, and Midlands-born 18-year-old (now 19) Justin Lee Price took to Twitter to specifically take aim at the forward.

He tweeted: “@MarcusRashford YOU F****** STUPID ****** MISSING A FREE PEN MY DEAD NAN COULD HAVE SCORED THAT,” according to a Crown Prosecution Service official. After originally denying that he was responsible for the tweet in his first interview, Price requested a second interview where he made a full confession after admitting to the offence to his mother.

In court on Wednesday, he then pleaded guilty to sending a grossly offensive message on a public communications network.Speaking at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court, as per Birmingham Live, Price’s solicitor said: “He spends a lot of time online, gaming, from his bedroom in online groups.

On the night this offence took place he was with that online group, but he accepts the responsibility is his. He knows it was wrong and regretted it as soon as it was sent."The solicitor went on to say that the use of the N-word in the tweet was due to Price listening to a lot of rap music and thus the word was ‘normalised to him’. "It wasn't uncommon for him to hear that [in rap music] when it's not used as a racist word, so it was normalised for him - he didn't understand the use of that word and didn't intend it as a hate crime," said the solicitor.District Judge Ian Strongman reduced Price’s jail term because he had pleaded guilty to the crime, also giving him a five-year restraining order to prevent him from making any contact with Rashford.
