“X-Men” is back in the cultural zeitgeist thanks to Marvel Animation’s hit animated series “X-Men ’97,” and while it’s a different beast, it is paving the way for some of the first significant mutants to join the MCU this summer in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” We already know that star/producer Ryan Reynolds offered filmmaker Shawn Levy the “Deadpool 3” gig during the filming of “The Adam Project” (they also worked together on “Free Guy”).

The Marvel Animation revival of the “X-Men: The Animated Series” with Marvel’s “X-Men ’97” is becoming one of the more popular animated projects ever to grace Disney+. It is so popular with fans at the moment that the creators have been asked all kinds of questions.

Is everyone and their mother in “Deadpool & Wolverine”? Filmmaker Shawn Levy has hinted at cameos several times (as has filmmaker Matthew Vaughn), and so has ‘Deadpool’ actor Karan Soni. The expectation, in general, seems to be: expect a ton, with many speculating that the upcoming third ‘Deadpool’ movie will be a goodbye to the 20th Century Studios era of Marvel movie-making.

During 20th Century Fox’s run and control of specific Marvel properties, many “X-Men” projects never got made. Some of those included Channing Tatum’s “Gambit,” a James Franco-led “Multiple Man” project, a solo “X-23” pic from “Logan” director James Mangold, an R-rated “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” written by “Game of Thrones” co-showrunner David Benioff, and even two different takes on “X-Force” from director Jeff Wadlow (“Kick-Ass 2”).
