Man Utd almost landed Carlo Ancelotti years ago - but Sir Alex Ferguson was too late
Manchester United tried to appoint Carlo Ancelotti as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor but the Italian had already given his word to Real Madrid. In 2013, upon the retirement of Ferguson, Man Utd were desperately scrambling to find a worthy heir to his Old Trafford throne.Despite eventually handing the job to David Moyes, the Red Devils did attempt to tempt Ancelotti back to England at the end of his time at PSG.Athletic writer Sam Pilger states Ferguson was a long-time admirer of Carlo Ancelotti."After he [Ferguson] retired in 2013 he spoke to me, but I had already given my word to Real Madrid," said Ancelotti, as reported by Pilger."They were too late. Yes, of course, I would have been interested in [going to] United."Having been turned down by Ancelotti, United plumped for Moyes with the Scotsman also a recommendation from Ferguson.Though the former Everton boss crumbled under the weight of expectation at Old Trafford and was axed just 10 months into his six-year contract. And it's not just Moyes who has failed to deliver success at Man Utd in the post-Ferguson era.HAVE YOUR SAY! 'Didn't want him in my life!' Chemmy Alcott named broken shin after golfer Sir Nick Faldo
Dancing on Ice star Chemmy Alcott has told how she named her horrific shin injury after celebrated professional golfer, Sir Nick Faldo.Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, the alpine ski racer, 39, opened up candidly about the injuries she's sustained throughout her skiing career, which included her breaking her neck aged 11 and a smash in 2010 that saw her bones pierce through both her skin and ski boots.Speaking about the horror crash which saw her break her right leg in two places in 2010, Chemmy told how she had been living with the pain. She said: "It was persistent straight after the crash."But I had it all the way until January last year."I had this, like, Nick Faldo size golf ball of swelling on the front of my shin that I squashed into a ski boot all the time," she added. The Ski Sunday presenter explained the reasoning behind naming her injury after the sportsman.Chemmy went on: "I always call him Nick Faldo."I'm a bit of a, 'name everything to personalise it', and I'm like, 'Oh, hey, Nick's, back today, I better take it easy.'"However, despite affectionately naming her injury after the sports commentator, she has never come face to face with him.Chemmy continued: "And I've actually never met Nick Faldo."And I've got nothing against him at all."But I didn't want him in my life, on my leg."Even though I was retired, I was spending a lot of time in a ski boot and actually working in skiing, I had relatively few days off," she divulged.Elsewhere in the interview, Chemmy opened up on wearing her injuries with "pride".She reasoned: "All the injuries were proof that I was willing and confident enough to take risks."A lot of my career, actually, in my healthiest, in my twenties, I didn't break anything."And it's

Sir Alex Ferguson's son Darren quits as Peterborough boss one week before Man City clash
Peterborough United manager one week before the FA Cup fifth round tie against Manchester City. The son of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex resigned via a phone call with club chief Darragh MacAnthony on Sunday. It came after Peterborough suffered a 1-0 defeat in the Championship to Derby County on Saturday, which left the side without a single win over the last two months. And with his side second from bottom in the table and five points from safety, the 50-year-old decided to call time on his third spell with the club.Ferguson re-joined Peterborough two years ago before guiding the side to an impressive second-place finish in League One last season. But things have been far from straightforward this season, having won just five matches out of 31 this season. And Peterborough announced their manager’s resignation with a brief statement on Sunday night. It read: "Peterborough United can confirm that the co-owners have accepted the resignation of manager Darren Ferguson following a phone call made by Darren to Darragh MacAnthony on Sunday."Ferguson’s decision to walk away came after he openly criticised his side’s display against Derby.Do you think Darren Ferguson made the right decision to step-down? Sir Alex Ferguson solved similar Cristiano Ronaldo problem before with ruthless move
Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United should take inspiration from Sir Alex Ferguson's ruthless decisions of the past and cut ties with Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer. The former Liverpool defender has been critical of the Portuguese superstar following his sensational Red Devils return last summer, previously labelling the striker a "passenger".Despite netting 15 goals this season, Ronaldo has often drawn criticism over his inability to press and has been accused of refusing to sacrifice personal glory for the greater good of his team. The 37-year-old has reportedly grown disillusioned with the club in recent months and, amid speculation that his second Old Trafford stint could come to a swift end this summer, Carragher believes United would be better off without him.The Sky Sports pundit feels United should look to the past and the ruthless decisions of legendary former manager Ferguson as inspiration for how to solve the problems Ronaldo creates."No single player can ever be bigger than the club," Carragher wrote in his column for the Telegraph."And no-one knew that better than Sir Alex Ferguson who, in 2006, sold one of the Premier League most prolific goalscorers, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, because he felt the striker’s personal hunger for goals was inhibiting the progress of younger, emerging team-mates.Should Manchester United let Cristiano Ronaldo go in the summer? Have your say in the comment section"Who reaped the rewards? Ronaldo, who thrived after Van Nistelrooy’s exit."Just like Van Nistelrooy 16 years ago, Ronaldo’s goal sprees have the capacity to make anyone deemed critical look foolish."It does not alter the fact that the next United manager will face the same issues as Rangnick in trying to keep him

Sir Alex Ferguson once begged one of worst Premier League keepers to stay at Man Utd
Manchester United, but he also had a few flops during his time.Although Ferguson had some of the greats in goal over his spell at United, for some reason every goalkeeper was prone to an iconic howler at Old Trafford, with Roy Carroll, Fabien Barthez and David De Gea amongst some of the shot-stoppers to embarrass themselves. One of the most famous incidents of all though, was when Massimo Taibi allowed Matt Le Tissier's shot to squeeze through his legs while his face planted into the ground, but by the time he picked himself up, the ball was in the net.Despite flopping at United, the goalkeeper who has just turned 52, claimed that it was his decision to leave United, and that Ferguson begged him to stay.Taibi joined United in 1999 for £4.5million after Peter Schmeichel left Old Trafford, but the Italian soon returned to his homeland the following year after making just four appearances for the first team. The goalkeeper revealed that it was a family issue causing him major issues, and that he had to return to Italy, but admitted that Ferguson was desperate to see him stay at the club. Unfortunately for Talibi, one of those four games included the howler against Southampton, but the Italian opened up about his time at United."Of course, it was 100% my decision to leave Manchester United.
