'Conscious AI' may already exist as expert receives backlash over terrifying warning
artificial intelligence expert has been criticised for saying that AI used for finance, research or medicine could have already developed a consciousness.OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever claimed on Twitter that: "It may be that today's largest neural networks are slightly conscious."Sutskever did not mention any specific developments but was likely referring to mega-scale neural networks, which is the language processing system built by OpenAI for translations, missing words and question answering. The expert was also unclear what "slightly conscious" means for the manmade machines, because the concept of consciousness in artificial intelligence is still considered a controversial idea. While AI has performed impressive tasks like driving cars, flying aircraft and creating an artificial voice or face, many believe machines having conscious thought is just "hype".AI researcher Toby Walsh at UNSW Sidney responded to Sutskever's claims, saying: "Every time such speculative comments get an airing, it takes months of effort to get the conversation back to more realistic opportunities and threats posed by AI."Thomas G Dietterich, an AI expert at Oregon State University in the US, said that he hasn't seen any evidence of consciousness in AI and suggested Stuskever could be "trolling" those on the social media platform. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletter by clicking here.He tweeted: "If consciousness is the ability to reflect upon and model themselves, I haven't seen any such capability in today's nets.

This Morning star Holly Willoughby was left scratching her head after hearing that tablets have an expiry date and can't just be thrown away. The TV beauty looked gobsmacked as she and co-host Alison Hammond talked about medications with Dr Ellie Cannon. The trio were discussing branded and non-branded medicine when a "best before date" was mentioned.Looking stunned, Holly said: "I didn't even know that was a thing on tablets, until I read that there and I was like, 'Oh my God is there?'""I've probably got stuff lurking at the back of my medicine cabinet," she added, as Alison suggested she had a good clear out.Holly had another surprise when Dr Cannon explained that tablets shouldn't just be thrown in the bin, but should be taken to a pharmacy to be disposed of safely."I didn't know that either!" the star exclaimed.Alison had joined Holly on the ITV programme to fill in for Phillip Schofield, who has been in Covid isolation. The presenter tested positive for the coronavirus at the end of January but, luckily, felt "fine".Appearing on This Morning via video link earlier this month, he assured fans: "I haven't even got a sore throat now. I've sneezed twice, and that's it! I've got a slight temperature."This is not what I expected, I've got to say."He is now headed back to the sofa after testing negative twice.Phillip announced the good news by sharing two photos of negative lateral flow tests on Instagram this week."Oh hello!! What do we have here?" he wrote on the first snap.Posting the picture of his second negative test, he wrote: "It's official!!! Two days negative...
