NME on the red carpet of the Mercury Prize 2022, Self Esteem revealed her love of singing Arctic Monkeys while “spangled” – as well as telling us about meeting Mr Blobby and progress on her next album.Rebecca Lucy Taylor – aka Self Esteem – was shortlisted for her acclaimed second album ‘Prioritise Pleasure‘, up against Sam Fender’s ‘Seventeen Going Under’,  Yard Act’s ‘The Overload’, Kojey Radical‘s ‘Reason To Smile’ and Harry Styles’ ‘Harry’s House’ for the prize last night, but ultimately lost out to Little Simz’s ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert‘.‘Prioritise Pleasure’ had been among the bookies’ favourites to win, but Taylor told us that she was paying no mind to the odds.“I’m in a better head space of thinking, ‘Genuinely, I’m someone that’s been nominated’; that’s all I asked for and all I wanted,” said Taylor. “Genuinely, my life has changed this year.

John Cale has announced details of his first new album in a decade, ‘Mercy’ – listen to his new track ‘Story Of Blood’, a collaboration with Weyes Blood, below.The founding Velvet Underground member will release the new album on January 20, 2023 via Domino.The collaboration-heavy album also features turns from Animal Collective, Fat White Family, Sylvan Esso, Laurel Halo, Tei Shi, Actress and more.Discussing his love of Weyes Blood, Cale said in a statement: “I’d been listening to Weyes Blood’s latest record and remembered Natalie’s puritanical vocals. I thought if I could get her to come and sing with me on the ‘Swing your soul’ section, and a few other harmonies, it would be beautiful.“What I got from her was something else! Once I understood the versatility in her voice, it was as if I’d written the song with her in mind all along. Her range and fearless approach to tonality was an unexpected surprise.

DMA’S have shared details of a UK tour booked to go down next April.The run will kick off in Cambridge on Wednesday April 5, with shows in Exeter and Bournemouth to follow in quick succession. They’ll round that week out with a gig in Aylesbury on Sunday April 9, before rolling on to Wolverhampton, Lincoln, Bradford, Middlesbrough and Dundee over the following week.From there, the Australian indie rockers will play in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Manchester, before wrapping up the tour in London on Friday April 21.

Just kidding!” said Hester Chambers, adding that the new album will take in “a bit of this and a bit of that, probably”.Revealing that they’ll be spending much of the next year writing the next record, singer Rhian Teasdale said that fans should expect it to be “like the last one, but longer, bigger, better, faster, stronger and more fluorescent.”The pair also spoke about the “surreal” experience of having one of their songs covered by Harry Styles, and how being covered by Pearl Jam was “very strange and funny and cool”.“It’s just strange when people know that you exist, who you wouldn’t have thought would know you exist,” Teasdale said.

Car Seat Headrest has announced that he’s cancelled his upcoming US tour and performances at the When We Were Young festival due to health issues.The band, fronted by Will Toledo, were set to begin a tour tomorrow (October 20) in Pioneertown, California which was set to run for the next week and incorporate three sets at Las Vegas’ When We Were Young.Taking to Twitter, Toledo revealed that ongoing health issues have forced the cancellation of the tour. He wrote: “After another month of struggling to regain my health, I am currently forced to face the fact that my body lacks the basic levels of functionality necessary to leave the house most days, let alone embark on a tour.“As a result, we are unfortunately forced to pull out of the When We Were Young festival dates, and cancel our upcoming California tour.

The Moldy Peaches are set to reunite next week for their first live show in over a decade at the Los Angeles premiere of Meet Me In The Bathroom.The duo – Adam Green and Kimya Dawson – last played together in 2011, and will get back together for a performance at the Fonda Theatre on October 27 as part of the LA launch of the new documentary.The Moldy Peaches star alongside The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and more in the forthcoming adaptation of Lizzy Goodman’s book about the early ’00s indie scene of New York City, which hits screens across the US on November 8. The film will then be available to stream on Showtime starting November 25.

Leftfield have shared a new single featuring Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten – listen to ‘Full Way Round’ below.The collaborative track serves as the latest preview of Leftfield’s fourth studio album ‘This Is What We Do’, which is due to arrive on December 2 via Virgin Records (pre-order/pre-save here).“‘Full Way Round’ was a perfect collaboration between beats and good vibes,” explained Leftfield in a joint statement.“Hard work and fun.

Arctic Monkeys have shared another track from their forthcoming new album ‘The Car’.The band have posted ‘I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am’, which the band debuted live earlier this year at the Zurich Openair festival in Switzerland.They have also shared a live video of the track, which was directed by Ben Chappell & Zackery Michael and filmed at the band’s recent King’s Theatre show in Brooklyn. Inspiral Carpets have confirmed that they are reuniting for a UK tour in spring 2023 – see full dates below and find tickets here.The indie veterans will hit the road for gigs next March and April, with the tour kicking off in Northampton and stopping in Newcastle, Oxford, Brighton, Cambridge, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Sheffield, London, Coventry and Frome.The band last played together in 2015, before they went on indefinite hiatus following the death of their drummer, Craig Gill. At the time the likes of Liam Gallagher, Stephen Holt and the city of Manchester paid tribute to Gill over Twitter.Formed by Clint Boon, Gill joined Inspiral Carpets at the age of just 14 in 1986.

Phoebe Bridgers will appear at two screenings of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas with live musical accompaniment at London’s OVO Arena Wembley in December, in which she will provide the voice of Sally.In addition to Bridgers, Danny Elfman – who composed the music, lyrics and score for the 1993 film, and voiced protagonist Jack Skellington – will voice Skellington once again for the screenings. Original cast member Ken Page, who voiced Oogie Boogie in the film, will also reprise his role.Other who are set to provide vocals for the performance include Randy Crenshaw, Greg Proops, Angie Jaree, Baraka May and Fletcher Sheridan.

Glass Animals‘ hit 2020 single ‘Heat Waves’ has officially broken the record for most weeks in the Billboard Hot 100, making it the longest-charting song in history.The song has entered its 91st week in the chart, officially beating the previously-held record of 90 by The Weeknd‘s ‘Blinding Lights’. The Weeknd himself broke the previously-established record just last year, overtaking Imagine Dragons – who spent 87 weeks on the chart with their 2012 song ‘Radioactive’.In a press statement to Billboard, the band’s frontman Dave Bayley remarked: “Wow, all I can say is wow.“Many of you know [that] when I wrote this song, I was writing about missing someone I loved very dearly. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that it would lead to so much love and connection across the globe.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have shared ‘Hate Dancin”, the lead single from their 23rd studio album (and third this month) ‘Changes’.The song follows on from the release of their album ‘Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava’ on October 7, and its follow-up ‘Laminated Denim’ just five days later on October 12.In a press statement about the song, frontman Stu Mackenzie offered a succinct, one-sentence description: “I started writing a song about how I hate dancing, but then I realised that I love dancing.” To Mackenzie’s point, the music video for ‘Hate Dancin” depicts him and his bandmates dancing to the song in a warehouse.It was directed by John Angus Stewart, who has worked on several videos and concert films for the band across their career. A Certain Ratio‘s Jez Kerr has opened up about his sexuality in a lengthy post on social media.Writing that he is “bisexual and crossdressing has been a part of my life from an early age”, Kerr went on to say: “I know this isn’t exactly a big deal in 2022, but it is something that I’ve only just managed to deal with and I hope by sharing, it might help someone else.“After a long period of illness, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on my life and have recognised that secrecy and unnecessary shame is not good for my mental health. I’m bisexual and crossdressing has been a part of my life from an early age.”Kerr said that “confusion and shame led me to surpress it and keep it secret.”An important message off our Jez.

Caroline Polachek has today (October 17) shared a new video for her latest single, ‘Sunset’ – check it out below.The song was co-produced by Polachek with Sega Bodega; Polachek also co-directed the song’s Barcelona-filmed video with Matt Copson. She had previously teased the track’s release on Instagram earlier this month.The single follows on from ‘Billions’, which arrived earlier this year and comes just weeks after the musician shared a track written for Kurt Cobain-inspired opera Last Days.Oliver Leith’s Last Days opera is based on Gus Van Sant’s 2005 film of the same name, which was inspired by the missing five days between Cobain absconding from a rehab facility in Los Angeles and killing himself in an outbuilding of his Seattle home.

Arctic Monkeys have brought recent single ‘Body Paint’ to German TV ahead of the release of new album ‘The Car’ this Friday (October 21) – see the performance below.‘Body Paint’ was released last month as the second single from the band’s seventh album, following first taster ‘There’d Better Be A Mirrorball’.The band have already performed the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and last week (October 11) they headed to the Late Night Berlin TV show to air a performance of the track.Reviewing ‘Body Paint’, NME wrote: “‘Body Paint’ may conjure up all the stirring emotions from ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ but the riveting track is proof that the band have no issue creating something otherworldly, even when the subject matter is far closer to earth.”Watch them perform it on German TV below.Last week, the band also added European headline dates to their 2023 world tour.

The 1975 frontman Matty Healy has opened up about his feelings on ‘cancel culture’, and his reasons for quitting Twitter after a controversial post back in 2020.Speaking to NME for this week’s Big Read cover story to mark the release of their fifth album, ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’, the frontman discussed deactivating his Twitter account back in 2020 following backlash to a Tweet he made after the death of George Floyd.Following Floyd’s death at the hands of policeman in the US and the subsequent public outcry and growth of the Black Lives Matter movement, Healy Tweeted: “If you truly believe that ‘ALL LIVES MATTER’ you need to stop facilitating the end of black ones.”The post also shared the video to The 1975’s single ‘Love It If We Made It’, which features the lyrics “selling melanin and then suffocate the black men / Start with misdemeanours and we’ll make a business out of them“. Many Twitter users then accused Healy of appropriating Black Lives Matter to sell and promote his own music, before he apologised for any upset and deleted his account.Speaking to NME for this week’s Big Read, Healy told us: “By that point, my reaction in the room to all that Twitter shit was like, ‘Oh fuck off! You know that I’m not using this as an opportunity to monetise the half-a-pence I get paid for a fucking YouTube play’.

Liam Gallagher has announced a new documentary based around his huge Knebworth shows this summer.Knebworth 22 is a feature-length film documenting the Oasis singer’s return to Knebworth Park, 26 years after his band’s iconic gigs at the Hertfordshire venue.The film will come to select UK cinemas for a limited time from November 17, with a full streaming release on Paramount+ later this year.“I’m still in shock that I got to play Knebworth 2 nights, 26 years after I played it with Oasis,” Gallagher said in a statement. “I’m still trying to get my head around it.“To have played to multiple generations at the same venue so many years apart was beyond Biblical.

Tame Impala have issued a warning about the light effects during their show after some audiences members suffered seizures during a gig in Aukland, New Zealand.The Australian psych-rock band band posted a note on their Instagram stories earlier today (October 16) warning any fans who are “susceptible” to “seizures” to take care during their shows because of the “intense” nature of the lighting effects.In a statement, the band said: “Hey guys, just a reminder that there are some quite intense visual moments in our show so please be careful if you think you might be sensitive to such things or susceptible to seizures.“Also if you see someone in trouble do the right thing by your fellow concert goer and help them/signal for help. We can usually get help there really quickly.
