Ana Obregón told ¡Hola! magazine that her son, Aless Lequio, who died aged 27 in 2020, had preserved samples of his sperm before he began treatment for cancer. “This girl is not my daughter, but rather my granddaughter,” Ms Obregón told the magazine. “It was Aless’s last wish to bring a child into the world. ”Ms Obregón, who was once rumoured to have had an affair with footballer David Beckham, was unrepentant about having organised the surrogacy birth that took place in a Miami hospital last month, a move described by some observers in Spain as “selfish” and “capricious”.
Members of Spain’s Left-wing government also criticised the socialite, with Irene Montero, the equality minister, describing surrogacy as “a form of violence against women”.
Surrogacy is illegal in Spain, although Spaniards who seek the procedure abroad are usually able to register their children when they return.
