The emergency surgery then saved Robert from Prestonpans, East Lothian but left him with a life changing disability, reports Edinburgh Live.
Now quick thinking of kind-hearted friends, he has been given his independence back. Local pals Davie Martin and Ian Johnstone came up with a plan to donate the mobility scooter of Ian's mum who sadly passed away, with Robert saying telling Edinburgh Live that he is incredibly grateful for the gesture.
