Scots farmhand died during horror quad bike accident after calf suddenly bolted in front of ‘speeding’ vehicle

farmhand was thrown from a speeding quad bike and suffered fatal injuries after crashing into a baby cow. Ian Pollock was using the vehicle to herd a mother and its newborn calf back to a dairy shed on Kilhenzie Farm, near Maybole, Ayrshire, in May 2018.

The 25-year-old had stopped to speak to his girlfriend, Shelby Harkness, who was also on the track road, before driving off ‘at speed’ towards his colleague and the two animals.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry was told how the fellow farmworker, James McGill, stepped onto the verge to allow the quad bike to pass but that the tiny calf suddenly ‘darted’ out into the road.A hearing determination read: “The cow and calf were in front of Mr McGill in single file on the road, the calf walking in.
