A team of scientists has discovered traces of ancient oceans, rich in useful carbon and nitrogen which are key ingredients of life in meteorites that landed in Antarctica millions of years ago.
The meteorites, which were discovered in 1984, have been a source of controversy. An examination of the compounds has prompted questions regarding their origin, and whether they came from Mars or were contaminated on Earth.
Such questions have created discourse over the findings in the meteorites, known as Allan Hills 84001. The meteorites contain organic materials, which Japanese scientists have now reexamined and claimed they have found evidence that life could have existed on Mars, as it would have had access to the same form of nitrogen
