You suspect there was very little about this week that went as Shaun Wane envisaged. It should have been a week where England's head coach got to grips with his stars ahead of the World Cup, followed by a strong performance at the end.

In reality, neither of those things happened. As England huffed and puffed before falling to defeat against the All Stars, it's hard not to wonder how much Wane actually got out of this week.

He will, under no uncertain terms, argue passionately that it was a worthwhile exercise. Any contact time for Wane under the circumstances is invaluable.

Yet there is no question that the sport has not helped him, at all. He needs more contact time with his squad. That was evident throughout this disjointed display.
