A state of emergency has been declared in the Arctic after 20,000 tonnes of diesel leaked into a river causing an "ecological catastrophe".
Devastating pictures show the horror of leak, as the Ambarnaya River near Norilsk in the Russian Arctic, runs red. The river is now covered in a toxic layer of diesel which can be set on fire, and the substance is seeping towards Lake Pyasino, which outflows as the Pyasina River into the Kara Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean.
Russian experts have declared a state of emergency in the region and the exact reason for the leak is under investigation. It is believed a giant fuel storage tank was damaged by collapsing soil due to global warming.
