United Utilities has fiercely denied dumping untreated sewage into part of the River Tame this week after a video circulated on social media.

Concerns were sparked when Professor Jamie Woodward, a professor of physical geography at the University of Manchester, shared a video online of the river flowing through Dukinfield, Tameside.

The academic claimed that the video showed a 'release of turbid brown untreated wastewater' into the river during 'low flows' and dry weather, adding: "This is why the Tame is so heavily contaminated with microplastics."
