Queen Elizabeth II has died at Balmoral today, aged 96, leaving the country in mourning. She was the UK's longest-serving monarch after reigning for 70 years.
The UK is now in a period of official mourning with her funeral due to take place within a fortnight. A statement from Buckingham Palace read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow." The Prince of Wales is now King, having acceded to the throne immediately on the death of his mother.
It is believed that the Queen's funeral will take place on Monday week - September 19 - and it is expected take place at Westminster Abbey in central London, reports the Mirror.
