Queen's state funeral has been confirmed as Monday, September 19, many people are wondering what that means for them.The day will be a national Bank Holiday – but normal Bank Holiday rules do not seem to apply this time around.Whereas normally, a Bank Holiday means that everyone gets an extra day off to go shopping or sit in the pub and watch some football, when the death of someone as important as Her Majesty The Queen is involved, the rules are very different.READ MORE: Meghan Markle fan in awe at Duchess' sweet gesture as she viewed Queen tributesAccording to official government guidance, companies do not have to give their employees a day off this time.This is mainly due to the short notice of the Bank Holiday, and the fact that these days are not, by law, required to be taken as holidays.Journalists, for example, do not normally have Bank Holiday periods off work.However, a Government spokesman said: “This is a matter for discussion between individuals and their employer.“There is no statutory entitlement to time off for bank holidays, but employers may include bank holidays as part of a worker’s leave entitlement.“The government cannot interfere in existing contractual arrangements between employers and workers.
However, we would expect that many workers will be able to take the day off on the bank holiday.“We also expect employers to respond sensitively to requests from workers who wish to take the day of the funeral off work.”The only confirmed closures at this stage is schools – which will potentially snowball into all companies closing, or at least working parents being allowed the day off, due to the need for childcare to be found at short notice.The funeral of Her Majesty, who died on Thursday (September 8).
