BBC Breakfast fans fume over Victoria Derbyshire's tense Ukraine refugee row with MP
BBC Breakfast host Victoria Derbyshire grilled the Secretary of State for the Armed Forces about how the UK can help civilians in a tense Ukraine refugees row. Ben Thompson and the 53-year-old broadcaster helmed the popular BBC One morning show on Saturday as they updated viewers on the latest developments of the Russian invasion in Ukraine,During the three-hour show, the co-hosts discussed the devastating situation at length, with emotional scenes from reporters on the ground, as locals fled cities such as Kyiv.In order to shed some light on what the UK can do to help the huge wave of refugees seeking asylum during the mum-of-two welcomed MP James Heappey onto the show via video link. But their heated discussion left the presenter with more questions than she started with as she grilled the politician as to whether or not the UK would allow Ukrainian immigrants into the country as refugees. It’s fair to say the party member was frazzled by the hard-hitting question while thousands of civilians prepare to take up arms and fight to protect their country from Putin’s invasion. In order to get a clear answer from the government, the journalist asked the politician point blank if UK would open its boarders to those in need at this desperate time. The presenter said: “I’m asking you, will England accept Ukrainians wanting to flee to safety? And if so, how many Ukranians?”In an attempt to avoid the uncomfortable questions, James replied: “Sorry, I thought I had been clear; I don’t know the answer to that question.
