Victoria Derbyshire didn't want husband Mark to marry her out of pity amid cancer battle

BBC News presenter Victoria Derbyshire has opened up about marrying her husband Mark Sandell following her breast cancer diagnosis.

In an unearthed interview, the mother-of-two, 53, candidly spoke about tying the knot with her beau following her diagnosis in 2015, revealing that she didn't want him to marry her if he "felt sorry" for her.The BBC star underwent a gruelling 301 days of treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer, including a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.However, following treatment, Victoria was given the all-clear with an 11 per cent chance of the cancer coming back.Addressing her diagnosis, the star said that having cancer had "changed her life", adding that she says "yes" to more opportunities that come her way.She even credited her decision to marry Mark to her cancer battle.Victoria and the radio producer became engaged before she was pregnant with her first child, Oliver .However, they didn't get round to tying the knot straight away.In 2018, they married in a private ceremony.Speaking about her decision to marry Mark, Victoria confessed that she had her reservations.She said: "After my diagnosis, I’d said, 'If we get through this I would like to get married, but I don’t want you to do it if it’s only because you feel sorry for me.'"It was weird to finally start calling him my husband, but amazing to get married at 49."I feel more complete now," she added to Stella Magazine last year.A year after her wedding, the star told The Sunday Times that she took the plunge into married life after worrying that her illness would take her life.She said: "I remember thinking Mark and I should marry quickly in case I die."It was joyous and teary, and the most magnificent day of my life."Victoria.
