Broadway’s Ain’t No Mo’ producer Lee Daniels announced today that NBA champ Dwyane Wade, actor Gabrielle Union and Drag Race star RuPaul will join the co-producing team of the comedy that begins previews tonight at the Belasco Theatre.

ABC has pushed the second season premiere of comedy series The Wonder Years to summer 2023. The network says a specific premiere date will be announced at a later time.

UK production and sales company Embankment Films has hired former WestEnd Films executive Toby Hill as Head of Production & Acquisitions.

Tyler Perry chose not to take offence to a negative reference in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Strange Loop following an intervention by Whoopi Goldberg. In Michael R. Jackson's hit Broadway show, the lead character Usher pens a musical and becomes annoyed that his parents want him to write a gospel play in the style of Perry.

Crystal Lucas-Perry, Fedna Jacquet, Marchánt Davis, Shannon Matesky and Ebony Marshall-Oliver will join the previously announced Jordan E. Cooper in the cast of Cooper’s upcoming Broadway play Ain’t No Mo’, produced by Lee Daniels.

UCP and Universal Television, divisions of Universal Studio Group, have each brought in an SVP-level development executive. Lee Daniels Entertainment President Marc Velez has been named SVP, Head of Development for UCP, reporting to Jennifer Gwartz, EVP, UCP. Former Netflix executive Naketha Mattocks joins Universal Television as SVP, Drama Development reporting to Vivian Cannon, EVP, Drama Development, UTV.

William Earl Variety has announced the lineup for its annual Business of Broadway breakfast presented by City National Bank in New York on Oct. 17. Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson will join the event for a keynote conversation about their collaboration on the revival of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” currently playing on Broadway. The programming will also include a Broadway producers panel moderated by Erik Piecuch, senior vice president and entertainment banking leader of City National Bank. The panel will feature Lee Daniels (“Ain’t No Mo’”), Cindy Tolan (“Death of a Salesman”), LaChanze (“Kimberly Akimbo” and “Topdog/Underdog”) and Ken Davenport (“A Beautiful Noise”). The producers will speak about their experiences premiering new productions on Broadway this season and how the business has changed since Broadway’s return.

Outfest is honoring Janelle Monáe in a big way. The actress, artist, author and singer will receive the Trailblazer Award at the organization's 2022 Outfest Legacy Awards presented by IMDb on Saturday, Oct.

Woman In Film, Los Angeles said Thursday that that She Said producer Dede Gardner, star Carey Mulligan and New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey will be honored next month at the 2022 WIF Honors. They join a recipient list that already includes the bestowing the group’s Crystal Awards to Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson, The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Don’t Worry Darling writer and director Katie Silberman and Olivia Wilde, respectively.

EJ Panaligan editor Janelle Monáe is set to be honored with the Trailblazer Award at the 2022 Outfest Legacy Awards. The special salute will be presented at Outfrest’s annual gala, held at Paramount Studios on Sat., Oct. 22, which marks the Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization’s 40th anniversary. The Trailblazer Award, presented by IMDb, recognizes Monáe’s role as an artist who has consistently shown her support for the LGBTQ+ community at large through her Grammy-nominated music and critically acclaimed acting. Monáe’s latest starring role will be seen in Netflix’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” set for release in December.

Patti LaBelle has joined the cast of ABC’s for Season 2 in the role of Shirley Williams, mother of Dulé Hill’s character Bill.

The new season is set to premiere midseason, but a premiere date has not been announced. LaBelle will play the mother of Bill Williams (Dulé Hill), Shirley Williams, who serves as the local church’s choir director. In the show, she also goes by “Mother Williams,” and is described as “sweet as can be, but there is another side to her that comes out when her choir members can’t hit the right notes.” The longtime singer and actress has appeared in films and television shows like “A Soldier’s Story,” “A Different World,” “American Horror Story” and more. She has also put up notable performances on competition shows such as “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Masked Singer.” LaBelle launched a record label in 2017 called GPE Records, and released her first jazz album, “Bel Hommage,” under her own banner.

Mo'Nique is set to star in an upcoming comedy special on Netflix, and the streaming service confirmed the news with a video on its main Twitter page.The Precious actress announced in the short clip that she will not only be working on her first special with the streaming service, but will also star in the Netflix film, The Deliverance.The star, 54, sued the company in 2019 for racial and gender bias and discrimination. She stated that she was offered $500,000 for her special to air on Netflix, while other comedians such as Dave Chapelle, received multi-million dollar deals.
