John Barnes talks marriage regrets as ex-footballer admits he was a 'terrible husband'
Kate Garraway, the retired Liverpool footballer, 58, branded himself a "terrible husband" as he told of his "guilt" over the mistakes which saw his first marriage come to an end.Looking back on his family life with the star, Kate told how the "revelation of John's fling with a former Miss Jamaica" saw his marriage breakdown. One of his daughters branded it a "turbulent" time for their family.Kate asked the star whether it was "tough" for him to hear about the effect it had on his children."It was," he said, adding, "I was a terrible husband, but I always tried to be a good father."Because I kind of felt that as long as I'm a good father then everything else is ok."Me and Suzy were never going to get back together and under different circumstances, I could have moved away or not seen as much of the kids."But I decided to stay in the area and be there for the kids."Kate frankly asked the star: "Did you think you could have your cake and eat it?"John went on to admit that his "ego" got the better of him, leading to the end of his marriage. He explained: "I got very carried away with the whole thing about football and fame and girls. That was the one time I suppose ego caught the better of me."I was a young, stupid footballer and things happen."It was everything that I didn't think I would be and I don't want to be, but it happened.

'They stole in the last thousand years' John Barnes weighs in on royal family debate
"They stole what they stole in the last thousand years or whatever, but we are where we are today.”But he did continue, and go on to say that he thinks the family are “good for the country” despite some faults. The star explained that despite many people’s concerns that the royals have undeserved privilege, so do many of those who complain about it.He weighed in, saying: “I like them and I think they're good for the country. "I think they're decent people who do a lot for charity.“People might say they don't deserve all that money because they haven't done anything.“But lots of people haven't done anything and still have the money and prestige.”John Barnes is a Jamaican-born footballer who played for Liverpool, scoring 108 goals in over 400 appearances. He has also appeared on viewers’ screens, starring in Celebrity Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing, and in January, he starred in Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel. But John has caused a stir with fans after voicing certain political opinions.During BBC’s Question Time in February 2019, the star said he thought that “the average person” didn’t understand the consequences of leaving the EU.Also present at the time was journalist Ella Whelan, who said that the comments were dangerous because “you’re essentially saying the average voter is thick.”He said: “When I say the average person doesn’t understand, you think that the average person, out of the 56 million, understands the ramifications of leaving Europe from a financial and economics point of view?”He added: “You think not understanding the ramifications from an economic point of view means that you’re thick?”Ms Whelan said the impact of Brexit had been discussed “ad nauseam”.

Kate Garraway's new TV job 'bittersweet' as husband Derek 'not well enough to enjoy it'
Kate Garraway has landed herself a new TV job as the presenter of ITV's Life Stories, a chat show which Piers Morgan previously helmed. The programme, which kicks off its newest season tonight, consists of 60-minute episodes, with many famous faces expected to explore their personal and professional careers. The Good Morning Britain co-host will have Welsh singer Charlotte Church and former Liverpool football player John Barnes as her guests on the premiere episode. And while Kate's career has continued to skyrocket over the past year, the mother-of-two says the entire experience has been "bittersweet". While things couldn't be going better for the 54-year-old professionally, her husband Derek Draper is still fighting the long-term effects of Covid-19. The latter was hospitalised back in March 2020, where he stayed for 13 months after his Covid infection caused him to suffer from a rare brain inflammation, attacking his kidneys, lungs and liver. Following his release from the hospital, Derek returned to the family home in North London. And while fans would have hoped for his condition to have improved since then, it was just last month when Kate confessed that her husband still had a long way to go. Speaking of her stint as the new presenter of Life Stories, a source told New! magazine that while the journalist is excited about her new TV role, she's still dealing with the stress of Derek's health back home. Kate has scooped up so many accolades, such as an NTA for her ITV documentary, Finding Derek, which she also helped produce, on top of being recognised on the Queen's New Year's Honours list."This is all of Kate's dreams coming true, this is what she hoped would come from her doing I'm A Celebrity in 2019," a source
