Daniel Lanois has signed a new record deal with BMG. The agreement brings all but one of his thirteen solo albums into the label’s catalogue, while its Modern Recordings imprint will handle the release of his new LP, ‘Player, Piano’, later this year.“Daniel Lanois is a sonic alchemist whose own work showcases the very best of his art, loved and admired by the artist community and fans around the world”, says BMG’s EVP Global Repertoire Fred Casimir. ”We are delighted he has chosen BMG as his label home”.Set for release on 23 Sep, ‘Player, Piano’ sees Lanois creating the contemporary piano album that he would like to hear.“There’s a race to be louder and brighter in the piano world that makes the instrument feel harsh and brittle to my ear”, he says. “I decided that if I was going to make a piano record, I wanted it to sound like recordings from the 40s and 50s, back when the piano was soft and beautiful”.Modern Recordings SVP Christian Kellersmann adds: “As in everything he does, Daniel makes the familiar new and the new familiar.

U2 wrapped up their residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere last night (March 2) by playing alongside Daniel Lanois and a pre-recorded Neil Finn.Lanois, who co-produced the band’s classic albums ‘The Joshua Tree’ and ‘Achtung Baby’, joined them on stage to play the latter record’s ‘One’.Additionally, U2 played a version of Crowded House’s ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’, a song they have been covering at recent shows. Roy Trakin The son of Canadian country dance instructors “Sheriff Norm” and “Down the Line Sue,” in a way, MNRK Music Group president-CEO Chris Taylor was destined to become one of the most legendary executives in the country’s music history. He his start in the early ‘90s as lead singer for the reggae-ska-funk band One, which signed with Virgin Records while he was still in law school. Opting for the latter as a career, Taylor opened his Toronto-based law firm in ’97 and went on to represent some of the country’s top acts — from Drake and Avril Lavigne to Nelly Furtado and Sum 41 — and launched the influential Last Gang indie label (Metric, Death from Above 1979, Mother Mother, Crystal Castles and more). When he sold the label to Entertainment One in 2016, he also shuttered his legal practice to head the eOne Music Group, which was rebranded MNRK Music Group after parent company Hasbro sold the company to Blackstone in 2021 for a reported $385 million.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The guest list for Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday all-star concerts at the Hollywood Bowl has been significantly expanded. Sixteen additional names were announced Wednesday for the already packed two-night lineup, representing a roughly 50% expansion of a bill that was advertised with 30 stars when it first went on sale — and immediately sold out — in January. Newly added stars from the worlds of rock, country and other genres include Dave Matthews, Emmylou Harris, Jack Johnson and fellow Texans George Strait and Gary Clark Jr. Nelson’s sole surviving fellow Highwayman, Kris Kristofferson, has also been appointed to the lineup. The son of one of those Highwaymen, Shooter Jennings, is joining the bill as well. Others freshly named to appear this Saturday or Sunday include Dwight Yoakam, Stephen Stills, Rodney Crowell, Booker T. Jones, Buddy Cannon, Daniel Lanois, Jamey Johnson, Waylon Payne and Lily Meola.

U2 have announced a remastered edition of ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ to mark the album’s 20th anniversary.
