The Oxford vaccine is just as effective at fighting the more contagious UK variant as the original virus, new research shows.
The findings by the Oxford Vaccines Group offer hope that the vaccination programme will rapidly reduce cases and could speed up a return to normality.
Scientists specifically looked at trial data on the B.1.1.7 variant that was first identified in Kent before sweeping the country.
Prof Andrew Pollard, a chief investigator on the Oxford vaccine trial, said the new data suggests “the vaccine not only protects against the original pandemic virus, but also protects against the novel variant, B.1.1.7”.
