The "Queen of Rock n' Roll" died at the age of 83 Wednesday at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, after a long illness. Following her death, the recently crowned 74-year-old monarch authorized the Band of the Welsh Guards to play Turner's song "The Best" during the famed ceremony in London Friday.

But it goes far beyond any basic level of influence for this British-bred, now Nashville-based powerhouse. Before becoming a recording artist and Grammy nominee, back in her native U.K., she was a teacher and lecturer in vocal biomechanics who would instruct young singers in how to emulate Turner’s singular voice… or at least how to try. Yola spoke with Variety about Turner, who died May 24 at age 83. These are some of her thoughts, on everything from Tina’s pure technique to the unique challenges she faced as a Black stylist without parallels or filters to her place in genre-bridging musical history.

So why does this imagination-teasing opposites-attract rom-com feel like a misfire? No one can accuse director Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur”) or his team of under-thinking the ultra-creative studio’s latest high-concept feature, which takes the four elements as identified by various ancient cultures — Fire, Water, Earth and Air — and reimagines them as uneasy neighbors in a crowded modern metropolis. But fun as it can be to soak in the movie’s cheeky sense of detail (from flame-retardant costumes to blink-and-you-miss-them background puns), the whole scenario seems forced: so much world-building to tell a story better suited to flesh-and-blood human characters.

The sweet opposites-attract love story proved charming to attendees, closing out the festival with a five-minute standing ovation. At least one grown man in the orchestra was wiping away his cascading tears as the credits began to roll. It’s safe to assume he wasn’t alone in his emotional response to the film. “My heart is about to explode,” said ”Elemental” director Peter Sohn. “This film has been about the richness of diversity. Our lives are better when there are different points of view.”

Britain’s Got Talent judges seem to be making their own rules this year, as in another show first, an eighth act was given the honour of being awarded the Golden Buzzer. Usually just five acts are given the privilege of having the Golden Buzzer pressed for them, a privilege that means the performance was so good that they are automatically granted a place in the live semi-finals of the show, skipping the boot camp stage and giving them a head start in the competition.
