Ofqual handed a private PR firm with links to Michael Gove and Dominic Cummings a £46,000 contract to clean up the exam results fiasco.
Lobbyist company Public First has been given more than £1m of taxpayers' cash in total for communications work since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic - without the contracts being opened up to bids from other firms.
Exam regulator Ofqual had already given Public First £49,000 for behind-the-scenes strategy work on the disastrous A-level algorithm.
And a new investigation by OpenDemocracy reveals they were given more cash to provide "urgent communications support" in August, as the plan descended into chaos.
