BBC One's much-loved programme Antiques Roadshow, one guest was utterly gobsmacked when he realised that one roll of wallpaper that he'd had in his loft was worth four figures.Just like the guest on the show, viewers at home were in shock too – but the majority who took to social media weren't raving over the wallpaper, but instead made sly digs at Boris Johnson.
Appearing on the show, showcasing his antique, the man in question was inquisitive to find out how much his wood block wallpaper by Walter Crane was worth.
Antique specialist Mark Hill was completely taken aback by the opulent roll of wallpaper from the early 1900s, and asked the guest: "Where on earth did you find this?"To which the man replied: "More than 40 years ago I was at agricultural college, and got a weekend job with a friend. "A farmer wanted the top floor of an oast house cleared for some French students, and he said: 'anything that will burn, burn, anything that won't burn, just put to one side'."I found this and I said to my friend, 'it's too good to burn', I didn't know what it was."He explained: "My friend said I was crazy and I dread to think what he burned.
Because he didn't keep anything. "The farmer came and I said: 'would you mind if I take it home?' and he said: 'if you want it, take it'."The man explained that he kept it because he loved it, but it was rolled up in his loft for more than 40 years because he didn't know what else to do with it.
