Notting Hill Carnival explodes with colour as early birds shower each other with paint

West London this morning after a two-year layoff forced by the coronavirus pandemic, and things are already getting very colourful.From the early morning, revellers have been on the streets, determined to make up for missing out the 2020 and 2021 events.The traditional J'ouvert celebration kicked the carnival off with a splash of colour, with carnival-goers playfully spraying each other with powdered paint and glitter.READ MORE Inside Notting Hill Carnival's colour, costumes and twerking after it's called offThe massive street festival brings over a million people to the area to enjoy the music, street food and (hopefully) sunshine.Revellers flocked to Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park to watch a curtain-raiser featuring five steel bands - Mangrove, Croydon Steel Orchestra, Ebony, Metronomes, and Pan Nation.Defending champions Mangrove have won for three years in a row, and member Joelle Gardiner, 34, said: "It is hard to put into words how good it would feel to win tonight.""I have been coming to carnival ever since I was six or seven, watching people play until I was at the age where I could get involved as well."The return of carnival was exciting for spectators as well as participants and people of all ages were dancing in the streets on Saturday (27 August).Bhavini Goyate, 29, who lives in Harrow, said: "I've been playing at carnival since I was 14 years old with this Brazilian Paraiso School of Samba, and we parade on Monday.”"To come back together is so special because a whole community are coming through for this year to come together again.
